Title of volunteer role – Watchkeeper
Role description – Carry out regular watches usually every 2-3 hours per week, attend station meetings and help out at fundraising events. Each station is responsible for raising sufficient funds to meet its running costs so fundraising events are an important part of the Watchkeepers duties. Volunteers can also take on specific roles such as secretary, treasurer, fundraisers, trainers, publicity or become a committee member helping with the overall running of the station.
Minimum time commitment & flexibility – 2-3 hours per week.
Any specific skills or experience required – Usually over 18 year olds but if you have a specific interest get in touch. No previous experience needed.
Training Offered and skills development potential – Training is carried out by experienced Watchkeepers both in the lookout station and in classroom settings. An oral assessment is carried out when you are ready, to check that all necessary competencies have been learned. Learn at your own pace. The training is designed not only to make you an efficient watchkeeper of value to the community, but also to increase your general knowledge of maritime matters
Other information – Founded in 1994, we recruit people in coastal communities and train them in skills which help to play a vital part in maritime search and rescue. We continue to roll-out plans to help improve costal safety, with teams trained to help deliver costal safety advice within their local communities.
